Horse Mania 2010

Return to the Herd

Voted "Best Outdoor Art in Lexington" by ACE Weekly in 2008, eight years after the event, the original Horse Mania captured the hearts and imaginations of Lexingtonians and visitors alike.  Now, as the entire region looks forward to the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, LexArts is planning to set up the corral and bring back the colorful horses.  Horse Mania 2010 promises to be one of the largest auxiliary attractions to the Games, guaranteed to charm and delight a projected 600,000-plus visitors.

An interesting addition to Horse Mania 2010 is that each of Lexington's Sister Cities (Deauville, France; County Kildare, Irland; Shinhidaka, Japan; and Newmarket, England) will reveive a horse for one of its local artists to decorate.  The Sister Cities horses will then be flown, via horse transport, back to Lexington to be put on display with the rest of the herd.

  • LexArts is currently soliciting sponsorships for the horses
  • $5000 for the 79 local horses
  • Call to artists was released on December 10, 2009
  • Artist selections will occur in the spring
  • Horses will hit the streets July 1, 2010 and will be on display for several months throughout the Games
  • Horses will be auctioned off at Keeneland in December 2010
  • The auction will generate funds to support local charities and Lexington's developing public art program
