Join us February 5 - 7 for Arts Showcase Weekend. Organized by LexArts, there will be over 30 free events which will include children's activities, concerts, exhibitions, workshops and much more. Participating arts gropus include the Lexington Youth Arts Council, the Lexington Art League, Lexington Children's Theatre, the Lexington Philharmonic, the Living Arts & Science Center, the Lexington Ballet, the Lexington Singers, the Jazz Arts Foundation, citizensCREATE! and many more.
This collaboration among many of Lexington's arts organizations is designed to acquaint residents with creative ways to live without leaving town. The opportunity to sample so many different artistic experiences and to become familiar with the many arts organizations in Lexington is a unique and fun opportunity that should not be missed.
Lexington's arts and cultural scene is rich because of the community supporty provided annually through the Fund for the Arts. Each year hundreds of individuals and businesses give generously to support many of the groups featured in the weekend.

Textiles of the World From the Collection of Dennis Penley - open through February 21 - in the first floor Gallery. The exhibit features a beautiful collection from the late weaver/weaving collector, with examples of ancient styles from Africa, South America and Indonesia. Escape the cold and come experience the tropical sounds of a Caribbean steelband! Between 4:30 and 6:30 on Friday, February 5, the Central Music Academy invites you to visit our open steelband rehearsal at 105 Spruce St (just west of the intersection of Corral and Elm Tree). Visitors will also be able to observe private lessons on string, wind, and percussion instruments, as well as take a tour of our facilities. CMA is the only music school in Lexington that focuses its entire efforts on providing free musical training to financially disadvantaged children, so please stop by and visit!

Our World in Pictures is collaborating with local artist, Luella Pavey, to present a hands-on exhibit showcasing the photography of the young participants in the OWIP program. We will display the photographs taken by the participants while allowing the public the opportunity to help create a mural based on the pieces. Our goals are to highlight the artistic growth of our participants and raise viewer’s awareness of the context in which these artists reside and create.

I.V.E, or Interactive Visual Expression, is an installation looking at new ways of drawing and painting (or mark making) through digital technology. I.V.E consists of three ultrasonic sensor stations that allow participants to create collaborative and digital “paintings” with the motion of their hands or other objects. A multi-user interactive visual display demonstrating collaboration between fine arts and technology, I.V.E, is one part of ARTiculation, an event held in April at the Living Arts and Science Center. All ages encouraged.

Swedish choral conductor Gary Graden will be conductor-in-residence for the Lexington Chamber Chorale from February 2 - February 6. In Addition to conducting the Chorale in performance on Saturday evening at 8pm, Mr. Graden will lead a conducting and repertoire workshop for choir conductors and choir singers in the morning. This workshop, free to all participants will spotlight Scandinavian choral music, music accessible to church, university, high school and community choirs.

Members of KaBooM Writing Collective discuss the publication of When the Bough Breaks, a new kind of anthology that includes reflections and writing suggestions. The group not only created pieces, but also wrote grants to support the publication, executed the manuscript layout, designed artwork, and even sewed individual book signatures. KaBooMers will answer your questions about forming a writing group, setting goals for the group, and carrying out a publishing project.

Bring the entire family to work as a team to produce a video clip of puppet animation. Start by creating your puppet(s) with paper, ribbon and fabric. Make up a short video sequence for your puppet to act out and then join Charlie Campbell in filming snapshots of various postures for your puppet to produce an animation clip. Clips will be emailed to each family. Limit 1 animation short per family. LAL encourages participants to arrive promptly at 2:30pm, ready to receive instructions. Contra Dancing is a form of American folk dance in which the dancers form a set of two parallel lines which run the length of the hall. It is led by a caller and accompanied by live music. For those who could not get tickets to our sold-out performance in the Lexington Opera House on Feb. 6, this is your chance to catch what you have missed, a unique interactive experience of Chinese-American culture directed by noted Chinese dance artist Cheryl Pan, a performer on the Kentucky Arts Council Performing Artist Directory and Arts Education Roster. As she has done in the past few years, she will present several amazing group dances that have rarely been seen before in Kentucky.
